Η Ερευνητική Ομάδα Smart RUE ανήκει στο Εργαστήριο Συστημάτων Ηλεκτρικής Ενέργειας (ΣΗΕ) της Σχολής Ηλεκτρολόγων Μηχανικών και Μηχανικών Υπολογιστών του Εθνικού Μετσόβιου Πολυτεχνείου. Συστάθηκε και λειτουργεί υπό την εποπτεία του καθηγητή Νίκου Χατζηαργυρίου και αποτελείται από μέλη ΔΕΠ, μεταδιδακτορικούς επιστήμονες, μεταπτυχιακούς φοιτητές και συνεργάτες-ερευνητές με υψηλή εξειδίκευση. Το 2012 το Εθνικό Μετσόβιο Πολυτεχνείο ήταν ανάμεσα στα 100 (98) καλύτερα Τεχνολογικά Ιδρύματα (Faculty of Engineering and Science) παγκοσμίως και η Σχολή Ηλεκτρολόγων Μηχανικών στις θέσεις (51-100) σύμφωνα με την κατάταξη QS Top Universities Rankings.
